According to Matanuska Glacier's Wikipedia page it is 27 miles (39 km) long by four miles (6.4 km) wide, and is the largest glacier accessible by car in the United States. These photos were taken from the Glenn Highway which follows along side the Matanuska River and passes very close the the glacier approximately 100 miles from Anchorage. It is the major source of the Matanuska River which flows south and west, separating Palmer from Butte, Alaska, and emptying into the Knik Arm of Cook Inlet, very near the Knik River. There are a couple of interesting photos here of the Matanuska River and the old bridge on this site. The Matanuska River is a very popular with white-water rafting companies. Adventure seekers often launch from the confluence of the Chickaloon River, and land at Sutton, Alaska.
The Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site, on the Glenn Highway Scenic Byway at milepost 101 is managed by Long Rifle Lodge, and is open to the public from March through the end of October.
