This recipe is great one for hiking, camping, and hunting excursions. The dry ingredients can be mixed ahead of time, and pack well in plastic bags. It is simple to cook over a campfire. Teach your kids and have them take part in preparing their own dinner!
Note: This is not my recipe, it was forwarded to me through email, and I have no idea who's it is.
Cowboy Bread/Bannock
- 1 cup of flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon oil
- 1/3 cup water
Mix dry ingredients. Add water slowly, while mixing, until you have a doughy consistency. Knead the moist dough for approximately 10 minutes. Sugar, honey, or raisins can be added if you prefer a sweeter bread. Grease and heat a frying pan, while the dough rests. Pull small balls of dough, and use your hands to flatten them into cakes. Keep in mind that the more you work the dough, the tougher the bread will be. Carefully place the cakes in your hot greased frying pan, and fry about 6 minutes on each side. Gently move the cakes as they cook to prevent sticking. Lift cakes occasionally to visually check the bottoms for browning. Once the bottoms have reached a golden brown, flip them and brown the other side. Can be served buttered, and sprinkled with honey or brown sugar.
