This grueling race along the northern Iditarod trail route has always started in Big Lake, Alaska. It began in 1984, as the “Iron Dog Iditarod”, and has been known as the “Gold Rush Classic”, the “Iron Dog Gold Rush Classic” and now the race is known officially as the 'Tesoro Iron Dog" since the Tesoro Corporation became a title sponsor. It is more than 2,000 miles over rough, frozen trails from Big Lake, to Nome, finishing up in Fairbanks, Alaska. 		31
